Program Overview

The DMSc program is a doctoral degree designed for PAs ready to lead in clinical practice, healthcare administration, and systems management. This flexible program empowers experienced PAs to deepen their expertise while exploring a topic of personal interest. Unlike a PhD, the DMSc focuses on applying strategic thinking and leadership within real-world healthcare settings. Unique specializations help students anticipate future clinical and demographic trends and leverage interdisciplinary faculty strengths. Advance your knowledge, sharpen your skills, and become a confident leader in medicine through the DMSc for PAs.

Program Structure

Our program is built for flexibility, offering 8-week courses with both asynchronous and select synchronous options so students can learn anytime, anywhere. With opportunities to choose electives and post-graduate certificates, students can tailor their academic journey to match their professional goals. Those seeking dual credentials can apply to one of seven graduate certificate pathways. Graduates of ARC-PA accredited master’s-level PA programs may transfer up to 9 credits, while UMSGS PA alumni can transfer up to 15 credits, accelerating their path to completion.

Why UMSGS?

The DMSc program stands out as a transformative experience for PAs who aspire to lead and innovate in healthcare. Designed for changemakers, it equips graduates with the advanced training needed to guide organizations, direct care teams, and spearhead research initiatives. Students benefit from a supportive faculty with real-world PA experience and engage in meaningful doctoral research focused on an issue that matters to them. This is more than a degree—it’s a launchpad for impact, leadership, and lasting professional growth.

Upon completing the Doctor of Medical Science program, graduates will be able to:

  • Apply advanced biomedical and clinical knowledge to patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams to enhance learning and care delivery.
  • Lead interprofessional teams to provide safe, effective, patient- and population-centered care.
  • Reflect critically on practice, literature, and data to support lifelong learning and continuous improvement.
  • Practice ethically and legally, demonstrating professionalism and accountability in delivering quality, affordable care.
  • Deliver evidence-based, person-centered care that promotes safety and health equity.
  • Integrate social, environmental, and policy determinants of health into clinical decision-making.
  • Use intercultural leadership and health systems science to address complex challenges and improve care outcomes.

As the PA profession continues to grow rapidly, so does the need for advanced education. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 27% increase in PA roles from 2022 to 2032¹. Nearly a quarter of new PAs plan to pursue further education. The DMSc at UMSGS offers a flexible curriculum with specialty training in high-demand areas.

Leadership among PAs is on the rise, with 40% serving in formal leadership roles. Yet only a small percentage reach executive positions, and formal leadership training remains limited. National PA organizations have made leadership development a strategic priority, but most PA master’s programs do not offer this training. The Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program is designed to close that gap, empowering PAs to lead confidently in clinical, academic, and community settings.
