Bio

Marcelo A. F. Ribeiro Jr., MD, MSc, PhD, FACS, is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is an attending trauma and acute care surgeon at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He serves as Director of the International Outreach Initiative and the International Research Program, leading global education, research, and training collaborations in trauma and acute care surgery. Dr. Ribeiro completed his medical degree, master’s, and PhD in operative techniques and experimental surgery in Brazil, followed by advanced training in general, hepatobiliary, and trauma surgery. He is board-certified in general surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and trauma surgery, with additional training in minimally invasive and robotic techniques.

Over a three-decade career across Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, he has held major academic and leadership positions, including Chair of Surgery, Dean of a medical school, and Division Chair of Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery at a major academic center. He has founded and directed residency and fellowship programs, led international educational initiatives, and trained hundreds of residents and fellows. His clinical and research interests focus on damage control surgery, open abdomen management, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, hepatobiliary trauma, and surgical education. He is an active member and leader in multiple international surgical societies and serves on the boards and committees of several major trauma organizations.
