Bio

Susan I Brundage, MD, MPH, FACS, FRCPSG, is Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a Trauma / Critical Care Surgeon at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Professor Brundage is a globally respected trauma surgeon and academic leader whose work spans continents, clinical excellence, surgical critical care, system development, and trauma education. With a robust research portfolio, a pivotal collaboration with the World Health Organization, and sustained contributions to international trauma training curricula and quality improvement, Prof. Brundage continues to influence trauma protocols and surgical education on multiple continents.

Her work has reshaped global trauma quality improvement by co-editing the World Health Organization’s Guidelines for Trauma Quality Improvement Programs, which serve as the definitive resource for developing and sustaining trauma systems, particularly in resource-limited environments. These guidelines have been adopted by ministries of health and trauma centers worldwide, driving measurable improvements in patient outcomes and system efficiency. Her commitment to education has advanced trauma capacity globally.

As Director of the International Masters in Trauma Sciences Degree at Queen Mary University of London and core faculty for the Association of Academic Surgeons Fundamentals of Surgical Research and Career Development Courses, she has trained hundreds of surgeons from North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand; empowering them to implement evidence-based practices in their home institutions, communities and countries. As an invited lecturer to a multitude of major surgical societies, including the International Association for the Surgery of Trauma and Intensive Care (IATSIC), the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES), Prof. Brundage has championed trauma care and trauma education, plus trauma quality improvement from Cairo to Cape Town to Bangkok, Bergen, and beyond.
