UMB Graduate School's Centennial Celebration
Students of all years and graduate programs came together on Thursday, April 25th to celebrate the University of Maryland, Baltimore Graduate School’s Centennial Anniversary! Dean of the Graduate School, Bruce Jarrell, and Vice Dean of the Graduate School, Roger Ward, opened with kind words about the multitude graduate school successes and all of the students’ research and hard work, as well as the continued advances and programs the graduate school is making.
Along with delicious food and drinks to enjoy, there was also a “Bake Your Thesis” competition at the UMB Graduate School Centennial Celebration. Students baked an item that was representative of some aspect of their thesis research. From a cochlear shaped cake consisting of cookie wafers representing genes that are being investigated in the inner ear to a bacterial shaped cake in the color of the “symptoms” the bacteria causes in humans, all of the baked goods were extremely clever, well depictive of the student’s projects, and most importantly mouth watering and delicious. A special congratulations to the 1st prize winner: Mannat Kalra and 2nd prize winner: Kim Filcek on your fantastic cake(Mannat) and macarons(Kim)!
During the event, we recognized our two “Outstanding Graduate Student Association (GSA) Representatives of 2019”. Much of the graduate school student body’s voice comes from the GSA, including representatives from each one of the graduate school’s programs. GSA would not be able to function properly without all of the amazing representatives that volunteer their time to attend meetings and discuss important issues of the graduate school and its students. Congratulations to our this year’s outstanding reps: Ashley Marquardt and Emily Smith! We appreciate all of the extra work you do for GSA as well as the many other organizations you serve in.
Thank you to everyone who came to the event and to each and every graduate student who makes our school so spectacular! A special thank you to Dean Erin Golembewski, Celeste Gerhart, GSA Exec, and everyone else who put on such a wonderful event for us to celebrate all of our accomplishments in this amazing graduate school!
