This unique 12-credit graduate certificate provides students with an opportunity to learn technology development and commercialization skills in the real world environment that combines theory and practice.
In this certificate, which is a partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, students experience the entire spectrum of the commercialization process: taking ideas from their life sciences bench research through invention, product development, technical and market feasibility analysis, intellectual property acquisition and protection, business design, and venture funding, while experiencing what is required to become a stakeholder in a new technology venture.

Explore Certificate Objectives
Students will develop an appreciation of the potential commercial implications of their research, learn to integrate multiple scientific disciplines into their work, and acquire the leadership and business skills necessary to turn their research ideas into commercial products and viable startups. This training will position them well for the pursuit of non-academic professional opportunities within the biotech industry.
At the conclusion of the certificate students will be able to:
- Discuss the process of commercializatio; to include market analysis, technology transfer, return on investment and intellectual property considerations.
- Compare and contrast regulatory and non-regulatory pathways of new product launch.
- Maintain appropriate level of confidentiality of intellectual property while discussing and exploring opportunities with others.
- Effectively lead and manage a team project.
- Present an executive summary for an entrepreneurial business plan to potential investors and their faculty.
Biomedical Entrepreneurship certificate is a 12-credit, five-course graduate certificate program offered in a hybrid learning environment. This means that we offer maximum flexibility to meet the needs of working professionals.
Your classmates will most likely be current practicing PhD or MBA students and professionals with a health, scientific, or medical background.
The Biomedical Entrepreneurship certificate is a stackable credential that can be applied toward a Master of Science in Health and Social Innovation. The 36-credit MS Health and Social Innovation program is available as a hybrid degree combining elements of online and in-class learning and can be completed by a working professional in as little as 24 months. Upon the successful completion of the certificate, all 15 of the credits are completely transferrable to the MS Health and Social Innovation program. This means that when you finish your certificate, if you choose you'll be 24 credits away from a Master's degree!
