The Golden ID program of the Graduate School at the University of Maryland, Baltimore offers academic opportunities for eligible Maryland residents at a greatly reduced cost. The application for admission fee is waived for Golden ID applicants and, if admitted, Golden ID students are exempt from tuition charges. Golden ID students are also entitled to library, lab and recreational facility use.
To be eligible for Golden ID benefits, you must gain entry into one of the departments or programs of Graduate School as a degree-seeking or non-degree student. You must meet the admissions requirements of the department/program as well as those of the Graduate School. In addition, you must:
- Be a legal resident of Maryland
- Be at least 60 years of age
- Be retired or not engaged in gainful employment for more than 20 hours per week
When you apply for admission, the Graduate School will ask you to supply information that verifies your eligibility for Golden ID benefits. Thus, in your application for admission materials, you should include:
- A photocopy of your Maryland driver’s license and/or passport to validate birth date and residency
- A photocopy of social security or pension statements and/or letter from former employer to validate retirement/employment status
Applying for Admission
Golden ID candidates may seek degree or non-degree admission following the instructions in the application for admission. You should be aware, however, that some programs will not enroll students on a non-degree basis; others operate on a “first come, first served” basis. Complete admissions guidelines and instructions are available at on our Admissions Page. Please note Golden ID applicants are expected to meet the same admissions criteria as all other Graduate School applicants. In addition to formally applying to the program of your choice, please complete the Golden ID Eligibility Form and route it to the Registrar's office for official approval.
Golden ID students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, are entitled to waiver of tuition for up to 3 courses per term. Total benefits cover the application fee and university tuition only. Expenses such as university fees and library fees are not covered by Golden ID benefits and are the student’s responsibility. Not all academic programs are eligible for Golden ID benefits. Please inquire with firstname.lastname@example.org about the eligibility of individual programs.
The following programs are not available to students utilizing Golden ID benefits: the School of Medicine MD program; the MS in Genetic Counseling; the School of Dentistry DDS program, Dental Post-Graduate Graduate programs, Dental Hygiene BS; School of Nursing graduate (master's or doctoral) degree programs (i.e., RN to MS/MSN, MS/MSN, DNP, or PhD); MSHS Physician Assistant program; MS in Forensic Medicine program; PhD Health Professions Education program; MS in Global Health Systems & Innovation-Costa Rica Track; MS in Med Cannabis Sci Therapeutics program; and the School of Pharmacy PharmD program. The preceding exclusions also apply if the student is pursuing a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate or not pursuing a degree.
UMB reserves the right to exclude other programs from Golden ID eligibility.
