In this period of uncertainty and apprehension following the terrorist attacks, those who plan to travel abroad can obtain information from the U.S. Department of State’s Web site at travel.state.gov.
Information at the site includes: - Current Travel Warnings: Travel warnings are issued when the department recommends that Americans avoid particular countries. These countries are listed at travel.state.gov/warnings_list.html.
- Current Public Announcements: Public announcements are used to distribute information quickly about terrorist threats and other relatively short-term conditions that pose significant risks or disruptions to Americans.
- Consular Information Sheets: These are published for every country with information on such matters as the health conditions, crime, unusual entry requirements, any areas of instability, and the location of the nearest embassy or consulate the country.
U.S. consulates also provide services to Americans traveling abroad such as assistance in locating appropriate medical services in cases of emergency, helping to locate U.S. citizens overseas when relatives or friends are concerned about their welfare or need to notify them of emergencies at home, and assistance to U.S. citizens arrested abroad. These services are described in detail on the site referenced above. Information provided by Academic Affairs, September 2001. top |
