Student Services Spotlight: Disability Services
The Office of Educational Support and Disability Services (ESDS) serves the UMB community in three distinct ways:
- By offering academic accommodations for UMB students with disabilities
- Educating the community on the issues pertaining to students with disabilities
- Providing all UMB students educational support through resources and academic coaching
To request academic accommodations, students should make an online request, provide the ESDS office with medical documentation, and have a one-on-one meeting with a staff member from ESDS to discuss individual needs.
The office also provides programming to the UMB community. In October, ESDS celebrates Disability Awareness with a weeklong of disability education serves to educate the campus such as Reframing Disability workshop, and a UMB student panel of students with disabilities sharing their personal experiences living with the community. In addition, ESDS facilitates trainings to the UMB community on disability-related issues such as the rights and responsibilities of students with disabilities, reframing the concept of “disability”, and learning more about the ADA.
ESDS also provides all UMB students with educational support resources. They facilitate workshops focusing on learning and study strategies, effective notetaking skills, and time management, and goals development. All UMB students are welcome to utilize Academic Coaching services that is associated with the ESDS office. This provides students with individualized attention to create a plan to complete their educational goals.
