State of the Graduate School
Welcome to the State of the Graduate School! Through this address, GSA hopes to inform all graduate students of important updates within the Graduate School and beyond. Check in each month to get information on issues that affect our students.
This month, we have updates on dental insurance, tuition & fees, and information about student group funding.
DENTAL INSURANCE – The Graduate School and GSA are happy to announce that students can now enroll in dental insurance through Gallagher Student Health! Dental insurance is being offered as an individual opt-in plan. Students may enroll at any time throughout the year, and coverage will begin the month after enrolling. To enroll, visit the Gallagher website and click on the Voluntary Dental box in the bottom right corner. Click the green "Enroll or Get a Quote" button and follow the prompts. If you don't see UMB on the drop-down menu, select "Get a Quote Based on My Current Location." The plan information can also be found using this link. Currently, we are not able to route dental insurance payments through Student Accounting. Payments can be made online using a credit card. If you have any questions or problems, please email umb.gsa.president@gmail.com.
STUDENT GROUP FUNDING – Are you involved in a student group on campus? Does your group need funding for your meetings or events? Groups can request funding from GSA! Funding is offered to student groups on a rolling basis throughout the semester. You will need to present an itemized budget and description of your event at a GSA Meeting (which are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 5:00PM) and answer any questions reps may have. All funding is offered on a reimbursement basis, so groups can request funding for events that have already occurred within the semester. All budgets should be sent to umb.gsa.treasurer@gmail.com at least one week before the meeting at which they will be presented and a representative from the group requesting funding should be present at the meeting. To be considered and for guidance, contact the GSA Treasurer (Susannah Shissler, umb.gsa.treasurer@gmail.com).
TUITION & FEES – UMB has updated their policy on tuition and fees, without making any major changes for 2017-2018. One change is that a financial hold will be placed on registration when the student account balance reaches $250 – this is an increase from the previous threshold of $50. As with the previous policy, no transcripts or diplomas will be released to students with any outstanding balance on their student account.
