Bites, brews, and baristas of “Charm City”
By Jennifer McFarland
Whether you’re new to the city or you’ve fallen into old habits, here are some trendy and unique Baltimore gems to check out.
- Papermoon Diner
This colorful sit-down restaurant houses a smattering of every-day objects such as manikins, Pez dispensers, and toy trucks fashioned into a visually eventful display. This distinctive décor makes Papermoon a feast for both the eyes and the stomach.
- Shoyou Sushi
This intimate and authentic sushi joint features a talented sushi chef who prepares hearty rolls. If you take a thorough look through the menu you may get a chuckle or two (teaser: the “Who’s Your Daddy” roll), and the fresh flavors are on-point.
- W.C. Harlan
This “speakeasy,” modeled after bars of the prohibition era, is appropriately clandestine and off the beaten path. The savory cocktails are made with fresh, quality ingredients, and the well-decorated interior transports you back to the 1920’s.
- Bar Clavel
This so-called mezchaleria features a variety of quality Mexican alcohols called mezchal, which packs a punch similar to that of tequila. For the milder drinkers, Clavel offers a variety of other Mexican drinks, such as michelada, a tasty spicy tomato juice and beer based beverage. Also, the tiny tacos will leave you wanting more. This chic Mexican atmosphere has a clean, hip feel.
- The Bun Shop
This unique, spacious scene is one to bring a pile of books and a friend who also enjoys a savory bite with their caffeine hit. A wide variety of “buns” stuffed with anything from chicken tikka masala to kalbi are available. The 3 a.m. closing time makes it one of the best late night study spots in town.
This cozy space located in the heart of hipster-inspired Hamden is always teeming with life. The large windows and backyard space allow for ample natural light and fresh air to go along with your coffee kick. The vibe clears the mind and refreshes the spirit, making it the prefect place to combat study burnout.
