Registration Procedures

Graduate School Course Registration
1. All degree-seeking students—except as noted below—must pick up   registration materials (including course registration forms and photo identification authorization forms) from their department’s main office or the appropriate graduate program office. The graduate program will provide directions on completing the registration process.

Nondegree students must pick up their materials and register in Graduate Enrollment Affairs, 515 Lombard Building, second floor.

Students in social work must obtain their materials and register in the School of Social Work, room 1W100. (Social Work: Course Schedules)

Students in nursing must obtain their registration materials (including the course registration form and photo identification authorization forms) and register in Admissions and Enrollment Management, School of Nursing, first floor. (Nursing: Registration Information and Course Schedules)

If your program has no course registration form for you, you may be ineligible to register. Check your eligibility with Graduate Enrollment Affairs, 515 Lombard Building, second floor.

2. Review and correct the information on your course registration form. The address listed is the address where the Graduate School sends all materials. Make sure it is accurate. It is your responsibility to insure that your correct permanent address is on file with the Graduate School.

3. Obtain necessary approval of course selections from your program. Fill in all course information as indicated on your preprinted course registration form.

4. Graduate assistants must register for ABGA 900 (GRAs) or ABGA 901 (GTAs).

Interinstitutional Course Registration
Interinstitutional enrollment forms are available from your program. Follow the instructions on the form. List each course separately on the preprinted course registration form. All students must register at the host and home campuses according to the procedures of each. University of Maryland Baltimore students registering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County must first register with the Graduate School. The Graduate School then processes the interinstitutional forms with UMBC.

Tuition and Fees
Registration is not complete nor official until your registration materials are deposited with the Graduate School and all financial obligations are satisfied. Students who fail to complete their registration as scheduled will be subject to a late registration fee. Students receive their tuition and fees bill from Student Accounting
. All tuition and fees are due and payable to the “University of Maryland” at registration. (See Fiscal Policy.)

Health Insurance
Full-time students are required to carry campus CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield insurance or the equivalent in the fall and spring semesters. Students with comparable coverage must waive CareFirst coverage by Sept. 15 for the fall semester and Feb. 15 for the spring semester. Complete the waiver form and show proof of coverage at Student Health, 29 S. Paca St. Retroactive cancellations are not available.

The university also offers an optional dental plan. You can get more information and enroll at Student Accounting, Administration Building, room 315.

ID Cards
Students must have identification cards. Complete a photo identification authorization form (available from your program office or the Graduate School) and have it signed by your program director, department chair, or other authorized representative. Take this form and another piece of photo identification to Public Safety in the Pine Street Police Station to have your ID photo taken. The photo ID office is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays.

Full-Time Enrollment Status
Enrollment status for all graduate students, including graduate international (F-1 and J-1 visa) and veteran (VA payment) students, is based on the number of units for which a student is registered. Full-time enrollment is 48 units per semester (excluding summer and winter sessions).

Graduate Assistants and AGBA
A graduate assistant holding a regular appointment is considered a full-time student if registered for at least 24 units besides the assistantship.

Graduate assistants must register for ABGA, a course officially establishing the students as graduate assistants. If graduate assistants do not register for the course, the Internal Revenue Service may not recognize them as working students and may tax them for Social Security (FICA).

Full-time graduate research assistants must register for 4 credits of ABGA 900 (section 1) for any semester or session in which they apply. For 10-month GRAs, this will be fall and spring. For 12-month GRAs, registration also includes the summer session. (No registration is required for the winter session.) Half-time GRAs must register for 2 credits of ABGA 900 (section 2), which is equivalent to 12 units. The same registration requirements apply to graduate teaching assistants except that GTAs register for ABGA 901.

Students register for ABGA 900 or 901 as an audit (A) course. Since a 900-level course carries 6 units per credit, this registration is equivalent to enrolling for 24 units. ABGA 900 or 901 registration does not count toward the tuition remission awarded as part of graduate assistant benefits and students do not pay for the course. Students may not use these credits to fulfill graduation requirements.

To maintain full-time status in the fall and spring semesters, full-time graduate assistants will need to register for an additional 24 units and half-time graduate assistants for an additional 36 units.

Audit Courses
Courses taken for audit cannot be counted for graduation credit. Charges for audit courses are the same as credit courses, except for ABGA courses.
