The UMB Office of Postdoctoral Scholars has moved to 110 S. Paca Street, 4th Floor.
About the Office Welcome to the University of Maryland Baltimore Office of Postdoctoral Scholars! We have a thriving academic community which includes over 400 postdoctoral scholars. UMB prides itself on recruiting skilled and talented scholars from all over the country, and is strongly committed to an affirmative action program for admitting qualified minority applicants for fellowship positions. An office was established in January 2006 to serve the needs of Postdoctoral Scholars. Our mission is to be an advocate and resource for postdoctoral researchers. This office will process admissions, track postdoc progress at UMB and afterwards, provide orientation and information about UMB, Baltimore, Maryland and the surrounding areas, and generally assist postdocs to fully utilize all the resources of the UMB community. The activities sponsored by this office are designed to complement the excellent research training by UMB faculty mentors. Definition of a Postdoctoral Scholar A Postdoctoral Scholar is an individual who has completed a terminal doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD, DDS) from an accredited academic institution and has elected to pursue additional specialized academic or research training in his/her discipline (or in a related disciple) under the direction of a mentor at UMB. The Postdoctoral Scholar position at UMB is a temporary training appointment that is intended to provide the trainee advanced preparation for an academic and/or research career. Postdoctoral Scholars are funded by training grants, research grants, and other institutional resources designated for training purposes. The Postdoctoral Scholar appointment must be renewed annually and can not exceed five years. Postdoctoral scholars are trainees and are not considered to be employees of UMB. Each scholar is expected to participate in a set of full-time sponsored training activities which are agreed to in writing prior to the appointment by both the Postdoctoral Scholar and the Mentor. These training activities should include both collaborative and independent projects, with the goal of career independence for the postdoctoral scholar at the end of the training period.
